About Blackwood & Stone
Blackwood & Stone is a residential building and craftsmanship business based in Southern Tasmania. Led by builder and craftsman Nathan McIntyre, the business brings together practical building experience, thoughtful project guidance and a genuine respect for quality materials.
Our current focus is helping property owners explore high-quality, thermally efficient granny flats and make better-informed decisions before construction begins through independent builder’s plan reviews.
Granny flats built for Tasmania
Blackwood & Stone is developing three high-quality granny-flat designs created for Tasmania’s climate and changing household needs.
Rather than treating a granny flat as a temporary or low-quality addition, Nathan’s approach prioritises thermal efficiency, practical layouts, quality construction and year-round comfort. The designs will provide flexible options for family, independent living, ageing in place and smaller-home living across Greater Hobart and Southern Tasmania.
Every property is different, so the process begins with understanding the site, its services, applicable planning requirements and how the new space will be used.
Independent plan reviews
Building decisions made early can significantly affect the complexity, practicality and eventual delivery of a project.
Nathan offers independent reviews of drafted plans and preliminary ideas from a builder’s perspective. These reviews can help identify constructability considerations, material choices, site challenges and practical questions to discuss with designers, engineers or other consultants before committing to construction.
The service is designed to give property owners a clearer understanding of what they are considering and greater confidence in the questions they need to ask.
Craftsmanship at every scale
Nathan’s handcrafted Tasmanian timber products are an extension of the way he approaches building: with patience, precision and respect for the material.
From a handcrafted cutting board to a complete residential project, the same principles remain - thoughtful design, careful workmanship, honest materials and a commitment to creating something made to last.

Cutting Board Timbers
At Blackwood and Stone, sustainability meets luxury. Our cutting boards and other timber creations are crafted from responsibly sourced Tasmanian hardwood, selected for their durability, beauty, and longevity. Every piece is thoughtfully designed for functionality and timeless appeal—made to be used, enjoyed, and cherished for generations.
Our Timbers
Huon Pine - Native to the cool rainforests of western Tasmania, Huon Pine is prized for its pale golden color, fine grain, and natural aroma. Highly durable and resistant to rot, it is perfect for heirloom-quality furniture and cutting boards, making it ideal for food-safe kitchen products. Each piece showcases elegance and longevity, aging beautifully over time.
Tasmanian Blackwood – Native to Tasmania, Tasmanian Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) is a richly coloured hardwood prized for its warm golden‑brown to deep brown tones and striking grain, which can be straight or beautifully wavy with a fiddleback figure. It’s stable, easy to work, and takes a smooth, high‑quality finish, making it ideal for fine furniture, cabinetry, joinery, and decorative timber pieces.
Tasmanian Oak native Australian hardwood timber sourced from three eucalyptus species found in Tasmania’s cool forests, including Mountain Ash, Alpine Ash, and Messmate. Its heartwood ranges from pale straw to light reddish‑brown, often with subtle cream or pink hues, and it typically has a straight, even grain that finishes beautifully. Known for its balanced strength and excellent workability, Tasmanian Oak is popular for furniture, flooring, panelling, and joinery.
